Mark and Liz Weisensee started OpenRoad Transportation with a vision of building something that would last for generations. Mark, a natural-born entrepreneur, and Liz, from a family of entrepreneurs, launched the business with a single employee, focusing on Truckload services. From the beginning, they were committed to putting their people first, growing profitably, and always keeping a long-term vision in mind.
With a growing team of three, we moved into our first office space at 289 E Ellendale Ave., Suite 502 (right across from their current headquarters). Liz took on multiple roles, managing HR, payroll, admin, and accounting—all while raising two young children. The resourcefulness and tenacity of those early days became a foundational part of our culture, driving our commitment to problem-solving and teamwork.
When the Great Recession hit, OpenRoad remained steadfast. By diversifying our customer base, we weathered the storm and continued to grow profitably—albeit nominally in this year—a testament to our adaptability and strong business principles.
Mark left his successful full-time construction career of over 20 years to dedicate himself fully to OpenRoad. This pivotal decision set the company on a new path of accelerated growth, with a team of 12 employees ready to take on new challenges.
OpenRoad opened its first branch office in Scottsdale, Arizona. Today, OpenRoad has 12 offices all across the US. These offices expanded our reach and brought us closer to key markets. We also expanded our surface transportation capabilities, adding LTL, Intermodal, and Drayage services to better serve our customers.
Our team moved into a new, larger headquarters at 288 E Ellendale Ave, providing a home base for sales, operations, and corporate employees.
OpenRoad launched the Global Forwarding division, introducing air, ocean, and customs brokerage services. This expansion enabled us to serve customers anywhere in the world, cementing our position as a truly global logistics provider.
This year marked a series of milestones. We rebranded to OpenRoad Global to reflect our worldwide reach, moved into our newly renovated HQ building, and surpassed 100,000 shipments executed in a year—the highest volume in our history. Through 2 decades of market cycles and black swan events, OpenRoad has maintained its streak of annual growth and profitability since day one.
